CFP for 2021 SESAH Annual Conference in Natchez, MS

September 29—October 2, 2021


The Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians is now accepting paper abstracts for the 2021 Annual Conference, to be held in Natchez, Mississippi, September 29—October 2, 2021, and co-hosted by Historic Natchez Foundation, Natchez National Historical Park, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The paper sessions will be held on Thursday and Friday, September 30 and October 1. Please submit paper and/or session proposals via Qualtrics at: SESAH 2021 Paper and Session Proposals by May 1, 2021.


The conference will be held at the Natchez Convention Center and the conference hotel will be the Natchez Grand Hotel. More details to follow regarding hotel registration.


We encourage submissions from architectural, landscape, preservation, and urban historians; independent scholars; architects; architectural theorists; museum curators; and other scholars in related fields. Submissions from graduate students in these fields are also welcome.

Participants need not work in, reside in, or focus their research within the Southeast or the twelve-state SESAH region. However, all accepted presenters and session chairs must join SESAH and register for the conference by the early registration deadline. Accepted presenters must also submit the complete text of their papers to their session chair by September 1, 2021. SESAH reserves the right to drop presenters who do not fulfill submission requirements. Paper presentations are 20 minutes maximum (approximately 2,300 to 2,500 words).

Papers on any architectural history topic and session theme are welcome. In addition, we invite submissions addressing the following themes:

  • Native American Landscapes of the South
  • African American Landscapes of the South
  • Women Designers of the South
  • Historic Preservation as Economic Development
  • Sustainable Design
  • Heritage Tourism and the Modern South
  • Rural Landscapes in the South
  • Vernacular Architecture


All abstracts of no more than 300 words will be submitted via Qualtrics at: SESAH 2021 Paper and Session Proposals. You will be asked for the following information:

  • Applicant’s First name
  • Applicant’s Last name
  • Email Address
  • Professional Affiliation
  • Title of the Proposed Paper
  • Abstracts of no more than 300 words to be pasted directly into the Qualtrics form
  • Five (5) Keywords
  • Short Biosketch (limit 250 words) for introduction purposes to be pasted into the form
  • CV or résumé must be uploaded into the form (in Word or PDF format)
  • Are you submitting this paper as part of a session proposal? If yes, you will then be asked for the title of the proposed session.
  • Are you requesting a travel grant? If yes, you will be required to upload your travel grant request.

If you are proposing a session, each speaker in the proposed session must complete a separate Qualtrics form and include the name of the session when prompted.

SESAH offers up to three travel grants for graduate students and one travel grant for an emerging professional. Applications are due with the abstract. The grant supports the recipient’s presentation of a scholarly paper at the conference as well as full attendance in conference activities: paper sessions, business meeting, keynote address, and study tour. The award is $400 for travel, which may be used for transportation, food, lodging, and/or other expenses related to attending the conference. See for more information.
